Downtown
Asheville
Because Asheville's downtown never experienced the economic
boom of the 60's and 70's, at least 170 historic buildings
were preserved. Today these buildings are the foundation
of its booming central business district. Many of Asheville's
Art Deco Style buildings have been revitalized into
coffeehouses and bakeries, speciality shops and brew
pubs, art galleries and antique emporiums; in fact they
host over 160 shops and 40 restaurants. There is plenty
to explore. Whatever you are looking for, you can find
it along the main streets of downtown historic Asheville.

The
Wall Street/Haywood block is lined with jewelry stores,
craft galleries, and award winning restaurants.
Lexington Avenue is packed with antiques, bookstores,
and boutiques. The Pack Square/Biltmore Avenue area is
an epicenter of arts and culture; home to four outstanding
museums, numerous art galleries, and the Diana Wortham
Theatre. As the shopping and nightlife scene develops,
the opportunities of downtown living grows too. The former
Asheville Hotel is the latest addition to the downtown
housing mix. |
Throughout
the year, downtown is alive with creative festivals like
Bele Chere, Light Up Your Holidays, and Shindig-On-The-Green.
Bele Chere, an arts and entertainment celebration, draws
thousands to the area in July. Scheduled events
include bicycle races, ballooning, and street dances.
Shindig-On-The-Green, a joint effort by the City and the
Chamber of Commerce, features authentic mountain music
and dancing at the city-county plaza throughout the summer.
With so much to offer, it is no wonder tourists are drawn
to downtown each year |
